Crags Trail – Castle Crags State Park
Like a stone fortress watching over the land, Castle Crags is one of Northern California's most spectacular rock formations, a city-sized collection of towering granite spires. The Crags Trail takes you up into the heart of the crags for breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding spires and nearby Mount Shasta. Along the way, you'll pass through a quiet canopy of pine and fir, and can explore the side trail to the shady oasis of Indian Springs. The Crags Trail is a challenging one, with over 2,000 feet of climbing, but views along the way are well worth the effort.

- Difficulty: Difficult – Significant uphill hiking, rocky trails, minor route finding.

- Best Season: Late spring through early fall (snow and other extreme conditions may be present in winter and spring)
- Kid Friendliness: Due to substantial climbing, this hike is recommended for children 13 and over.
- Dog Friendliness: Dogs are not allowed on trails in Castle Crags State Park. Dogs are only permitted on paved roads and campgrounds inside the park.
Trail Description
From the parking lot, follow the flat Root Creek Trail 0.3 miles to the Crags Trail junction. Follow the Crags Trail up through shady pine forest, passing the Pacific Crest Trail first and Bob's Hat Trail shortly after (about 0.7 miles in). At 1.5 miles, take the spur trail to Indian Springs—a cool, fern-draped spring tucked into the crags. Indian Springs is a great spot to catch your breath and refresh your water before the next section.
A short distance beyond Indian Springs, a wooden sign marks the boundary into Castle Crags Wilderness. From here the trail enters the crags proper, climbing past a few granite towers, before skirting up the base of some big walls as you make your way up to Castle Dome. As you climb, the forest thins into alpine zone, offering magnificent views of the surrounding spires and Mount Shasta. Hikers should pay extra attention to route-finding here as it is possible to lose the trail within the crags.
While not marked with a sign, the trail tops out at an open expanse of rock opposite Castle Dome, a great spot for lunch and photos. It may be tempting to scramble around some of the rocks in this area, but please be wary of any steep cliffs or sheer drop-offs.
The return trip is completed by following the same route back to the Vista Point Trailhead, noting the trail junctions at Indian Springs, Bob's Hat Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Root Creek Trail. The descent is a welcome break from the near-constant climbing up to Castle Dome, but hikers should still use caution on rocky or steep sections.
Recommended Gear
In winter and early spring, mud and snow may be present along the trail.
Bonus Trail: Vista Point Trail
The Vista Point Trail is an easy, quarter-mile trail to a scenic overlook featuring excellent views of both Castle Crags and Mount Shasta. The viewpoint includes mounted telescopes, a picnic table, and an informational board detailing the local geology.
Driving Directions
From Redding, CA (South)
- Drive North on I-5 for approximately 48 miles.
- Take Exit 728 for Castle Crags State Park / Castella.
- Turn right onto Castle Creek Road, then take an immediate left onto Castella Loop / Park Road into the park entrance.
- Pay the entrance fee at the park entrance, then continue uphill along Park Road for about 1.5 miles to the Vista Point Trailhead parking area at the end of the road.
Note: A California State Parks day-use vehicle fee is required for parking in Castle Crags State Park. As of 2026, day-use parking fees are $8 per vehicle. Park fees can be paid at the park entrance.
