Oswald West SP - 13-Mile Oregon Coast Trail Challenge Trek
Share
The section of the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) passing through Oswald West State Park is one of the most spectacular 13-mile stretches of the entire 362-mile OCT route. This shuttle hike traverses the entire Oswald West State Park, moving from the deep, "wild" rainforests of Arch Cape to the north, across the remote headlands of Cape Falcon, through the surf-culture hub of Short Sand Beach, and finally over the massive heights of Neahkahnie Mountain. If you are seeking a challenging adventure, this is the trek for you!
Trail Stats:
- Distance: Approximately 13.0 miles
- Total Elevation Gain: Approximately 2,600–3,000 feet
- Difficulty: Strenuous, long distance with substantial climbing
- Duration: 7–10 hours
- Best Season: Late Spring through Fall
Toltrek Tip: Camping is prohibited within Oswald West State Park, so most through-hikers plan this entire segment as one long day hike.
Trail Description
Start this trail at the Shingle Mill Lane Trailhead in Arch Cape, just north of the park. The trailhead is in a residential area, so do a quick check to make sure you are parked lawfully, and not blocking any driveways. Since this hike requires a shuttle, also ensure that you have a vehicle or someone to pick you up at the Neahkahnie Mountain Trail South Trailhead at the end of the hike. Cross the small suspension bridge at Arch Cape Creek, and you are off!
The trail immediately dives into a dense coastal rainforest. This initial leg is characterized by a steady climb through a lush, ancient pine forest. Watch this section for Skunk Cabbage and salamanders along the trail. About 1.2 miles in, the trail crosses Highway 101 and parallels the roadway for another mile, before ascending the ridgeline of the Cape Falcon Headlands. From the ridge, you’ll enjoy multiple panoramic views of Cannon Beach and its iconic Haystack Rock.
Roughly 5 miles into your hike, you will reach Cape Falcon. Take a break to enjoy the view over the secluded cove. Continuing another half mile to the souther tip of the cape, check out the short detour to the rocky end of the cape for panoramic views to the south.
From the cape, the trail descends another 2.5 miles to the surf and driftwood of Short Sand Beach. This is the ideal midpoint to take a break, use the restrooms, and perhaps catch a glimpse of Blumenthal Falls spilling onto the sand.
From Short Sand Beach, find the Elk Flats Trail heading south, which will take you another 2.5 miles to Elk Flats. Follow the spur trail here to the fenced overlook at Devil’s Cauldron, where the Pacific crashes into a sheer-walled volcanic cove.
The final and most demanding section begins after you cross Highway 101 again to reach the northern approach of Neahkahnie Mountain. You will engage in a substantial climb of approximately 1,500 feet to reach the summit. At the 1,623-foot peak, you are rewarded with the park's most iconic view: a sweeping panorama over the City of Manzanita and the Nehalem Bay. The journey concludes with a steep, 1.5-mile descent down the mountain’s southern face, finishing at the South Trailhead at the end of Neahkahnie Mountain Road.
