Wahclella Falls Trail - A Lollipop Affair
Share
Tucked within the steep basalt walls of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, the hike to Wahclella Falls is short, but satisfying. This lollipop loop trail leads you deep into a canyon where Tanner Creek churns through log jams and ancient boulders, culminating at a beautiful, two-tiered waterfall that feels far more remote than its easy access suggests. Whether you’re looking for a quick afternoon escape or a dramatic introduction to the Gorge’s natural history, Wahclella offers a sensory-rich journey through mist and moss.
Trail Stats:
- Distance: 2.4 miles round trip
- Total Elevation Gain: Approx. 675 ft
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Duration: 1–2 hours
- Best Season: Spring through Fall (icy or muddy conditions may be present in Winter)
Trail Description
The adventure begins at the trailhead where a wide, gentle access road follows Tanner Creek upstream for a quarter mile. Continue past the small dam structure, where the access road ends and the footpath begins. Just past the bridge, watch for a sign marking the boundary to the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness.
The path will climb for the next quarter mile to a trail junction at the base of the "lollipop" loop. Both forks lead to the falls, but we recommend heading to the right where you can take a break from climbing and descend back down to Tanner Creek. Heading right puts you on the loop in the counter-clockwise direction.
The lower path hugs the creek bed, crossing a sturdy bridge where you can look down into the clear, rushing water. As you round the bend, the 350-foot Wahclella Falls comes into view, pouring into a pretty blue-green splash pool. Take a break at the falls to enjoy the view, dip your feet in the pool, or wait in line to take selfies!
Find the return trail at the top of the big rock where everyone takes pictures, and make your way back along the east side of the canyon. The return leg of the loop stays high on the canyon wall, providing a different perspective of the forest canopy before reconnecting with the main trail for the easy walk back to the trailhead.
Toltrek Tip – Keep an eye on the creek during late fall to spot spawning salmon.
